What to see around the Thau lagoon? In one or two days: oysters and the Thau Lagoon Museum in Bouzigues, the Gallo-Roman Villa-Loupian and the Saint-Hippolyte chapel in Loupian, the harbour at Mèze, Marseillan and Noilly Prat, then in Balaruc-les-Bains the spa, the remains of a Gallo-Roman basilica and the Jardin Antique Méditerranéen. Sète closes the loop on the sea side.

The Thau lagoon stretches about 19 km. It is not a lake: it is a salt lagoon, linked to the sea by the graus of Sète and Marseillan. Oysters grow here (Bouzigues) and mussels too. Rheumatic joints are treated at Balaruc-les-Bains, France’s busiest spa town by visitor numbers. Some mornings, flamingos appear.

The villages — Bouzigues, Loupian, Mèze, Marseillan, Balaruc — line the northern shore. Lunch almost with your feet in the water, a jug of Picpoul de Pinet, a dozen oysters. In Balaruc, the FLAMINGO ART studio turns the lagoon into paintings: the souvenir that will not melt in the cool box.

Must-sees, village by village

Balaruc-les-Bains

France’s busiest spa town by visitor numbers. Worth seeing: the remains of a Gallo-Roman basilica (free entry) and the Jardin Antique Méditerranéen, labelled “Jardin remarquable”1. Walk along the lagoon, or kayak from Balaruc. By appointment, the FLAMINGO ART studio (19 avenue du Port), where Véronique creates paintings of the lagoon.

Bouzigues

The oyster village. Taste them in a farmer’s cabin rather than a beach restaurant. The Thau Lagoon Museum – Louis Higounet, labelled “Musée de France”, tells the story of fishing and oyster farming on the lagoon1.

Loupian

The Gallo-Roman site museum Villa-Loupian, a listed historic monument, and the Saint-Hippolyte chapel (free, Centre des monuments nationaux)1.

Mèze

The harbour, and the Jeanne-Oulié hall, which hosts the Itinérances of the Festival de Thau (see the news).

Marseillan

The harbour, the Noilly Prat house and, close by, the Pointe des Onglous, where the Canal du Midi meets the lagoon2. Every autumn, the Eel Festival: 11th edition on Saturday 17 October 2026, place du Théâtre, free entry.

By bike: the 3-museum route

From Loupian, a 15.6 km route runs to Balaruc-les-Bains past the Villa-Loupian, the Thau Lagoon Museum in Bouzigues and the Jardin Antique Méditerranéen, with an oyster stop on the way. For a quieter ride, the Mèze–Balaruc-le-Vieux greenway (12 km) follows the lagoon through vines and garrigue2.

On Saturday 7 November, at 6:30 and 9:30 pm, the Thau Lagoon museum hosts "20 000 rôles sous les eaux", a role-playing evening run by Le Manoir du Crime to relive the story and sinking of the Justine and the Olympia. Ages 12 and up, €2 or €4, tickets on manoirducrime.fr.

On Friday 20 November, the Salle Jeanne-Oulié in Mèze hosts a double bill from the Festival de Thau's Itinérances series: Erwan Naour solo, followed by the duo Léna Vassiliu Music, mixing jazz, bossa and swing. Seated concert, €18 (€15 in advance).
