Climate & season
The coast is one of the sunniest in mainland France — often cited as more than 300 days. Summers are dry, autumns long, winters mild on the coast and harsher once you climb toward the Larzac. The west wind (tramontane / cers depending on the shore) sweeps the lagoon and clears the sky: some of Thau’s finest light arrives after a day of local mistral.
May, June, September, early October are the golden months. July–August: book everything, aim for 8 a.m., accept the crowds at Saint-Guilhem and the Cap. Winter holds thanks to the spa, the Halles and the museums.
Getting around
LiO and Montpellier trams cover the urban day-to-day. For the rest, a car (or an e-bike along the lido) changes everything. Parking is tight in summer in Sète, Palavas and Saint-Guilhem: arrive before 10 a.m., or leave the car at a park-and-ride.
Common questions
Do I need a car?
No if you stay between Montpellier, Palavas and Sète (tram, TER, bike). Yes as soon as you aim for Navacelles, Salagou, Pézenas in depth or the wine estates.
Where to see flamingos?
On the Thau lagoon and nearby lagoons, especially outside high summer, early morning. Nothing is guaranteed: they are birds, not an attraction.
Where to buy a real local souvenir?
Markets, estate cellars, oil, honey, salt. For a lagoon souvenir, see the Thau basin.
Daily budget?
Allow €15–25 for a plate of oysters and a jug, €8–12 for a tielle. Nature sites (Navacelles, Salagou, Pont du Diable) are cheap or free; parking and caves cost more.
Is the water clean for swimming?
Lido beaches and Grande Conque are supervised in summer. In the Hérault river, check the flow after a storm. The lagoon has swim spots — warmer, muddier — it is not the sea.
