Cirque de Navacelles

The Vis river cut a meander, then abandoned it. At the bottom, a hamlet. Around it, limestone cliffs. Stop first at the belvederes — Blandas on the Gard side, Baume Auriol on the Hérault side — before you descend. The hairpin road is not for anyone in a hurry, nor for coaches that are too long.

The site is vast and fragile. Out of season or early in the morning, you hear the wind. In summer, arrive before 9 a.m. Bring shoes, water, and time to do nothing once you are down.

Red earth

Salagou lake

Ruffe, that wine-lees red earth, gives Salagou the look of a miniature canyon. The lake is artificial (a 1960s dam); the landscape is geological. Mountain bike, sail, swim — and above all walk in the evening when the light turns copper.

Nearby: the village of Celles, long half-drowned, and the Mourèze cirque, a forest of dolomitic rocks. You can link the two in one afternoon.

Stone and garrigue

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

The abbey of Gellone, the cloister (part of which is in New York, The Cloisters), Place de la Liberté: Saint-Guilhem is a Romanesque jewel at the bottom of the gorges. Arrive at opening, or stay overnight, to hear the village without the coaches.

Guilhem, a cousin of Charlemagne, retired here. The Saint James pilgrimage still passes through. In summer the single lane saturates toward 11 a.m. Leave at 8:30, visit the abbey, climb back before the rush.

Living water

Hérault gorges & Pont du Diable

The Pont du Diable (11th century) spans the Hérault between Aniane and Saint-Jean-de-Fos. Above it, a later road bridge. Below, green water where people swim as soon as the heat rises. The site is set up (walkways, path): arrive early in summer — the water is shared with many others.

Continue to the Clamouse caves, or take a kayak into the gorges. Further east, the Demoiselles caves open another world under the causse. Further north, Haut-Languedoc and the Passa Païs greenway link Olargues to the ridges.
